China’s approach to polish its image has long been reactive and mostly domestic: media outlets and websites are being censored, propaganda directives control media coverage and critical journalists are being tried for absurd charges and sentenced to long jail terms. However, Xi Jinping now tries to export this oppressive model by promoting a “new world media order” under China’s influence. Beijing is lavishing money on modernizing its international TV broadcasting, investing in foreign media outlets, buying vast amounts of advertising in the international media, and inviting journalists from all over the world on all-expense-paid trips visits to China. How successful is the export of the Chinese journalism model? And how should western media react to this development?
